An Adventure Point coffee shop stood close to the entrance and in the shadow of the Black Whip rollercoaster, which shot overhead every few minutes. Bad park planning, as far as Napier was concerned. Who wanted to listen to kids screaming accompanied by the din of the high-speed carriages while they took a break? The few occupants of the clean café seemed to share the same opinion. A few older couples sat at the small tables, quietly talking with steaming mugs sitting between them. Napier caught one old fella wincing as the Black Whip shot over them once more.

“Nothing like a quite cuppa, eh?” said Napier and placed the tray on the table.

Campbell smiled politely, thanked him, and took one of the two mugs.

Napier sat, immediately fidgeting with the wooden stirrers.

“Are you okay?” Campbell asked again. How many times now?

Napier ripped open a sachet of brown sugar. “I think I’m going to go crazy if I’m asked that again.”

Campbell smirked but stayed silent.

“My ribs hurt. A lot,” said Napier. “Head’s not too bad. My brains haven’t been scrambled, despite what Dallas and his henchmen think.”

Campbell added two packets of sugar to his drink. The rollercoaster roared above them. “If you don’t want to discuss it, that’s fine. But what did happen last night? Dallas said you were attacked here in the park, but that’s all I know.”

“Before I tell you,” said Napier, “I want to ask you a few things first.”

“You said you wanted to talk about my work.”

“And I do,” said Napier. “In a manner of speaking.”

He plucked the red folder from the tray and opened it. From within, he removed a folded piece of paper.

“You’re going to think I’m crazy too after this.”

Unfolding the paper, he smoothed it out on the table beside his mug.

The leering face of Grere, Master Surgeon of The Forgotten, stared up from the lines of ink.

“Have you done any more work on this?”

Campbell raised his eyebrows and sipped his drink. “You’re something,” he said, lowering the cup. “Really something. After all this, you’re still working away. That shows a real commitment, you know that?”

Napier shook his head. “No, no, no! This isn’t in a professional context. I just want to know out of curiosity…have you done any more work? Created any more characters for the comic? Thought up a storyline?”

Campbell placed his drink on the table and turned his hands palms up.

“No. I haven’t gone near it since the day I brought you that draft. There’s been things going on at the house, and I’m sure you appreciate what effect being attacked can bring on, especially since last night. My wife’s been a wreck, jumpy and nervous, with some odd interest in Jack Grim from my detective series a few years back. And Bethany? Well…she hasn’t exactly been a party in a funhouse of late.”

Napier lowered his eyes. “Yes, I noticed she was a little sullen when you brought her here.”

Campbell laughed. “When we came here? No, she’s always like that. In fact, she was what I’d call…chirpy, that day.
